Inhabited by Europeans since the 1600s, and by the Native Americans long before that, it should not be a surprise that Maine is home to dozens of memorable legends.

Nearly every Mainer knows at least a few tales of ghost ships, haunted lighthouses, phantom hitchhikers, alien abductions, or mysterious creatures.

Have you ever heard the tale of the Phantom Moose?

The Phantom Moose of Lobster Lake

For over a century, locals and visitors have told the story of spotting a white moose along the shores of Piscataquis County's Lobster Lake.

According to the Cryptidz Fandom website, the moose was first seen by a hunting guide in 1891.  Guide Clarence Duffy, who was from Old Town, was not able to get close enough to the moose to take a shot but was reportedly horrified by the creature.

While albino moose are a thing, it stands out because of its size.  It is often described as being a few feet taller than the tallest moose and weighing as much as 2,500 pounds.  By comparison, a typical moose weighs about 1,000 to 1,500  pounds.

Later that year, a hunter from Bangor was able to get close enough to take a shot at the moose.

The article says, in part:

The slugs reportedly had no effect and bounced off, and the Moose charged at him. The next year, a New York sportsman named Howard Van Ness was hunting. He shot the moose, who he described as weighing a ton, being as tall as a camel, with magnificent antlers. The moose had not been affected and again, came at Van Ness.

The moose was not seen again until 1895 when it was spotted by a taxidermist from Bangor.

In the following decades, the sighting of the moose came in waves.

According to local lore, the moose is often spotted just before something bad happens in the area.
