According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, a weekend search is planned for a Maine man who has not been seen since 2017.

The press release explains that 47-year-old Russell Burnett, of Franklin, was reported missing to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department on February 23, 2017. Investigators say he was last seen around February 21 near his home on Eastbrook Road, and is believed to have left on foot with his dog.

Due to the case’s complexity, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North took over the investigation in August 2017, while the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department has continued to assist. Despite multiple searches of the home and surrounding property over the years, Burnett has not been found.

Now, authorities are continuing their efforts. On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the Maine Warden Service will lead a ground search in Eastbrook, focusing on a high-probability area. Officials say this is a routine step in long-term missing person cases, there is no danger to the public, and the search will be handled by law enforcement without assistance from the public.

If you know anything about Burnett's disappearance, you can call 207.973.3700 EXT. 9 and ask to speak with Det. Dana Austin.
