San Diego Unified School has landed a new vehicle for its campus, a mine resistant Army truck. It was received through the Pentagon’s excess property giveaway program with a huge allotment coming to San Diego.

The school applied for and received a grant to get the vehicle for free. It’s known as an MRAP, or a Mine Resistant Ambush Protection Vehicle. The school had to pay the $5,000 to transport the truck to its location but other than that it was free. The estimate on the trucks value is $65,070.

Some think its overkill, the purchase of such a vehicle for the school, but school officials are thankful for the handout. They have painted it grey and plan to make it available to local law enforcement, buy also plan on stocking it with medical supplies and using it to rescue students if a shooting breaks out on campus.

Let’s hope they never have to use it.
