According to WCSH 6, Kennebec County Sheriff Ken Mason is warning the public about a scammer pretending to work for him.

According to a post on the Kennebec County Sheriff Department Facebook page, the scammer (who has reportedly been calling from a Texas phone number) says he works for Sheriff Mason and the sheriff's supervisor Michael Gibson (there is no person by that name working for the department).

The scammer claims that the potential victim needs to wire them money in order to clear up an identity issue.

The post explains:

"The story was that someone had used the victim's social security number to purchase a car. The car was then stolen and the victim needed to wire money to an account to clear it up. Please do not give out personal information to anyone over the telephone. The Sheriff's Office will not contact you and ask you to wire money anywhere."
