Warnings Posted After Shark Sighted Near Popular Midcoast Maine Beach
Even though sharks have been known to swim off the coast of Maine for centuries, it has only been the last few years when people have really started paying attention to these ocean predators.
A recent sighting has the authorities warning beachgoers in one part of about the dangers of sharks.
According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, warning flags have been raised over Cedar Beach in Harpswell.
The warning comes after two documented shark sightings near Bailey Island.
Even with the flags up, people are still allowed in the water. They are meant as a warning so people can make informed decisions.
If you happen to spot a shark off the coast officials want you to do two things: snap a photo if it’s safe to do so, and then call the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center at 207-893-2810. That way, beach managers around Casco Bay can stay in the loop and respond quickly if needed.
Whether it’s posting warnings, temporarily clearing the water, or just keeping an extra close eye, your report helps them make the call.
It is hard to believe that it has been nearly five years since the last fatal shark attack in Maine. We were all shocked by the July 27th, 2020 fatal shark attack that took place near Bailey Island. On that day, Julie Dimperio Holowach, a New Yorker who vacationed in Maine, was attacked and killed.
Following that fatal attack there were several shark sightings, but no further attacks.
