Even though, overall, Maine is a fairly safe state, it does not mean we don't see our fair share of crime.

Lately, we have seen a spike in crimes relating to gas pumps and parking lots.

For example, recently, we learned about a scam that involved criminals taking control of a gas pump under the guise that they are trying to help the targets (who are typically older of females).  Instead, however, they are keeping the pump active so that they can pump their gas on the target's dime.  You can read about that HERE.

It looks like there is another pump-related scam.

How Does the Slider Scam Work?

According to ABC 5 in Minnesota, the 'slider' scam involves raiding people's vehicles for valuables.

Basically, thieves will drive their vehicle near the stopped vehicle of a target.  One of the thieves will jump out and 'slide' up to the passenger door of the target vehicle.  Providing the vehicle is unlocked, they will open the passenger door, grab whatever valuables are nearby, and run.

In some cases, thieves target the vehicles of people who have briefly gone into a business.  To buy a pack of smokes or pre-pay for gas, for example.

In some cases, thieves are much more brazen.  They wait until the driver of a recently parked vehicle opens his or her door to exit the vehicle and quickly open the passenger door.

This video from Atlanta, Georgia, shows just how quickly these crimes can go down:

The perpetrators of these crimes typically try to steal small, valuable items like computers, smartphones, wallets, credit/debit cards, and even your identification.

One of the worst parts of this crime is how shocking it is for the people who fall victim to it.  These thefts often happen so fast that people are left traumatized by the event.

How Do You Protect Yourself From Slider Crimes?

The best thing you can do is be aware of your surroundings.  Keep an eye out for people who appear to be lurking around your vehicle and for vehicles that may be following you.

Additionally, you should always keep your vehicle doors locked and keep valuables out of sight.
