Scientists say, the water we are drinking today, dates to more than 4.5 billion years ago. Water molecules that make up drinking water on Earth are older than the solar system.

It was found that water on earth and throughout the solar system has a distinct chemical make-up and can only form before the swirling dust and gas that gave birth to planets, moons and comets.

Some water on our planet is older than the sun and suggests water may be common among young planetary systems across the universe. It is still unclear how water arrived on Earth although one theory is it came from ice in comets and asteroids that slammed into earth after it was cooling.
