Former longtime Maine U.S. Senator William S. Cohen will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame this spring. Cohen starred in basketball and baseball at Bangor High School and was also secretary of defense in the Cabinet of former President Bill Clinton.

He'll be honored at the organization's 38th annual banquet at the Augusta Civic Center on May 5.

Cohen was an All-State selection as a Ram in basketball and a standout pitcher. He continued his basketball career at Bowdoin College, where he was team captain and an All-State Series selection.

Richard L. Whitmore, President of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame told the Lewiston Sun-Journal:

This is a most significant induction for our organization. The life and career of Secretary Cohen are a heartening testimonial to hard work, competitiveness and capability. The secretary has graciously accepted the honor. We are delighted to add his name to the impressive list of men and women who comprise one of the most outstanding Hall of Fame induction rosters anywhere.

Cohen is among 10 new inductees including: Rickey Craven, Paul Vachon, Paula Doughty, Gary Fifield, Skip Robinson, Bob Russo, Manchester Wheeler, Douglas Brown and John Wolfgram.

The induction ceremony and banquet will begin at noon and tickets are available from the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
