Even though we had a lot of rain this spring, we ended up with a very nice summer and (so far) fall.

That being said, we all know that we are likely going to get slammed with at least a few major storms this winter.  Until recently, when we got hit by a major winter storm, we would refer to that storm by that date (or dates) that it hit us.

However, since the winter of 2012 and 2013, the National Weather Service has been naming major winter storms.  Similar to how tropical storms and hurricanes are named, the name are pulled from a predetermined pool.

There is a storm name starting with each letter of the alphabet and the names alternate genders.  For example, Amelia, Brad, Cara, David, etc.
