A mobile home in Winthrop was destroyed by fire early this morning and the homeowner has been charged with setting the fire .

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, the fire was reported to the Winthrop Fire Dept. around 2 AM today (Oct. 20) at 386 Rte 133, Winthrop.

Officials said the Winthrop Fire Dept., assisted by the Lakes Region Mutual aid group and the Monmouth Fire Dept. had the fire under control within an hour. The home owner, Charles Reed, 64, was at home but not injured. The Fire Marshal’s office was requested to assist with the fire investigation.

According to the Fire Marshal's Office, during the investigation, Reed was arrested for arson and violation of conditions of release. Reed was on conditions of release for a previous arson charge relating to a fire at his home on May 1, 2014 on the Blue Road in Monmouth. In both cases, the mobile homes were destroyed. Reed was transported to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.

The Fire Marshal’s Office had 4 investigators on scene. Assisting at the scene was the Winthrop Ambulance Service, Winthrop and Monmouth Police Departments.  The investigation is continuing, marshals said.
