The owner of a dog that was reported to have been thrown from a car on Route 4 in Livermore has cleared up the story, saying that the dog jumped from her car without her knowledge after she had stopped to retrieve a bottle that her two-year-old granddaughter had dropped.

According to the dog's owner, Nancy Hutchinson, she was driving with the dog, which is named Jackson, another dog and her granddaughter, when her granddaughter became upset after dropping her bottle.

Hutchinson said she pulled over to the side of the road to retrieve the bottle and settle the girl, and while the car was stopped and she was engaged with her granddaughter, Jackson jumped from the car without her knowledge, which is why the dog was evidently chasing after the car while she drove away.

Hutchinson said she was unaware the dog, which she said had jumped from her car before, was no longer with them until she had returned home sometime later.

She became aware of the reports that the dog had been thrown from the car when she was alerted to a Facebook post on the Maine Lost Dog Recovery Facebook page by Androscoggin County Animal Control Officer Richard Burton, saying that witnesses saw the dog thrown from the car and chasing after the vehicle. The post reported that the dog had been safely brought to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.

Hutchinson said she spent the weekend trying to track down Burton and her dog to clear up the story. According to Hutchinson, she spoke to Burton over the weekend and explained the situation, and that she had plans to meet Burton at the Humane Society today (May 30) to recover her dog.

A call to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society was referred to Burton. A message to Burton seeking comment had not been returned as of the publication of this story.
