American kitchens in the 1980s were filled with strange gadgets.

Microwaves were starting to become commonplace, we had food dehydrators, bread makers, odd vegetable chopping tools, hand-hammered woks (that were meant to improve our skill at cooking Chinese food), and ice cream makers.

Yes, one of the food fads of that decade was making homemade ice cream.  Why would you go to the store and spend a few dollars to buy a carton of Friendly's or Ben & Jerry's when you can spend a lot of money on special ingredients, stress out over the process of making it, and make your kitchen a mess at the same time?

I used to love making ice cream when I was a kid, but now I realize why my father was never a big fan.

Before this week, it had been years since I thought about making ice cream at home.

Denise Tries to Make Ice Cream at Home

You've probably heard me mention that my daughter, Denise, has been home sick this week.

When she is sick, she generally spends most of her time watching TV or playing Fortnite.

Not this time.  She decided that, because she wanted a sweet treat and we didn't have any in the house, she was going to make ice cream.

She found a recipe for making ice cream in a jury-rigged ice cream maker that is made using two Ziplock baggies.  There were two problems with this: she did not have the necessary ingredients and it is not as easy as it looked.

In the end, all she made was a mess and ice cream that was somewhat salty because the salt added to the ice leaked into the bag with the ingredients.

The Proper Way to Make Ice Cream Using Ziplock Bags

Apparently, this is not some random thing that popped up when she did a Google search.

I was able to find a video that shows the proper way to make ice cream using a couple of Ziplock bags.  It looks fairly simple.

Have you ever tried it?  How did it come out?
