This is an interesting topic.  A couple weeks ago, I was watching the news, and honestly I can't remember if it was national or local.  They did an undercover investigation about local bakeries and whether or not they charge more for a cake because it's for a wedding.  Through their investigation, this was the case.  Watching this story, brought up my own personal experience...

When my, now 12 year old, daughter was turning 1...I went to a local bakery in Central Maine.  I wanted the large round cake that you traditionally see on the bottom of a 3 tiered wedding cake.  Plus, I wanted the top small round cake as her personal cake to 'destroy'...as is the tradition with all kids turning 1.  I requested that the 2 cakes be fully decorated with multiple colors and piping and butterflies.  They were GORGEOUS!!  I'm certain there was a lot of effort and energy put into it by the baker.  My cost?  $50.

8 months later, my cousin was getting married and planning to have a simple backyard wedding.  She wanted a 3 tiered cake with nothing fancy...simple white frosting.  No piping or flowers.  Her plan was to add her own decorations to the cake.  I immediately mentioned the bakery I used for my daughter's cake...knowing I had purchased 2 tiers...and she simply wanted the additional middle round cake.  How much more could she possibly have to pay for the third additional tier?  She was charged $600!  Why?  It was a wedding cake.
