According to a Press Release from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, this year, October 24th marks the 19th annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was put into place as a safe way for patients to dispose of their unused prescriptions safely and responsibly.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

The Penobscot County Sheriffs Office will be set up at the Airport Mall on Friday, October 23rd, and Saturday, October 24th. The Bureau of Highway Saftey will also be on-site at the Drug Take-Back event on Saturday from 10-2 with its Roadside Testing Vehicle.

If you or someone you know has any unused prescription drugs, we encourage you to bring them to this event; it could save an innocent life.
