Even though it has been a problem for decades, the issue of Maine's lack of affordable housing has really intensified in recent years.

These days, depending on where in the state you are looking, a one-bedroom apartment will cost you between $1,000 and $2,000 a month.  We're basing this on a check of Craigslist postings.

Fortunately, there is some help coming to Central Maine.

99 Western Apartments

Located at 99 Western Avenue in Augusta, on the spot where a century-old office building once stood, the new apartment building has 38 affordable worker housing units.

These apartments, a mix of studio and one-bedroom units, have all of the latest amenities.  The kitchens are equipped with stainless steel appliances, each unit has a smart thermostat-controlled heat pump, and they are wired for fiber.

Additionally, the complex has a common room for birthday parties & family gatherings, a large deck, and ample parking.

One of the most attractive things about these apartments is where they are located.  They are within walking distance, or a short drive, from all that Western Avenue has to offer.  They are also less than a five-minute drive from downtown Augusta.

Lease-Up Day

Mastway Development will be holding a 'lease-up' day on Thursday, August 22.  This will give potential tenants a chance to tour the apartments and fill out rental applications.  This event will run from 2 to 6 p.m.

As these apartments are meant to be affordable worker housing, they are affordably priced.  A studio apartment rents for $801 per month, and a one-bedroom apartment rents for $843 per month.

Keep in mind that there are income requirements for these apartments.  If you make too much money, you won't be eligible to rent these units.
