According to the Augusta Public Works Facebook Page, Augusta's Front Street parking lot will be closed from now (12/25/2020 5:54 PM) until further notice due to the risk of flooding.
With the region seeing nearly 2.0 inches of rain on Christmas day accompanied by higher than normal temperatures and rapid snow melt, the department is expecting the Kennebec River to crest her banks sometimes overnight on Christmas.
Below is the statement from the department's Facebook page indicating that the water may even reach the backs of the buildings. As always, we remind you to never go near flood water as currents and water levels can change rapidly and with water temperatures this low, any extended exposure could result in hypothermia or worse.
The Front Street Parking Lot in Augusta is closed. The river is forecast to rise and flood that parking lot later this evening. The flooding may reach the buildings at some point. We will reopen the lot once the danger of flooding is over.
Please continue to monitor river conditions and flood warnings as conditions can change rapidly with heavy rain and snow melt.
