Flowers Foods, based in Thomasville, Georgia, has signed an agreement to aquire several of Hostess' food brands and bakeries, including the bakery in Biddeford. The Biddeford Hostess plant had employed nearly 600 people. Hostess had filed for bankruptcy in January 2012 and in November closed for good.

Flowers has signed two asset-purchase agreements with Hostess. One of the agreements provides for the purchase of the Wonder, Nature's Pride, Merita, Home Pride and Butternut bread brands; 20 bakeries, including the one in Biddeford. This is just the beginning stages of a possible rebirth for the Biddeford plant. The deal is still subject to bankruptcy court approval.

Flowers Foods in July 2012 acquired Lepage Bakeries, which owns two bakeries in Auburn and one in Vermont.
