Traffic Alert: Several Major Central Maine Roads to be Repaved This Year
According to an article on the KJ website, two of the most traveled roads in Central Maine will soon undergo repaving projects
The article explains that a nearly two mile stretch of Skowhegan's Madison Avenue, between High Street and the Skowhegan/Madison town line, will go through a "mill and fill".
Basically, the workers will chisel off the top layers of asphalt and fill it in with new pavement. If they just kept paving over the old road, it would eventually start to rise above the surrounding area.
The article explains that the Madison Avenue project will also include repair work on a quarter-mile stretch of road formally known as U.S. Route 201A. That's the road (street?) that carries traffic on and over the island downtown by means of the Margaret Chase Smith Bridge.
In addition to the work in Skowhegan, a nearly 7-mile stretch of U.S. Route 2, which is known to locals as the Canaan Road, is getting a fresh layer of pavement. This section runs from the Route 150 intersection all the way to the Canaan town line and includes part of Water Street. Crews will be laying down a 1.5-inch overlay to smooth things out.
Both of the projects are expected to begin in the next few weeks. The estimated date of complete will be sometime near the end of July 2026. Yes, these projects are expected to take about a year.
While the article does not specifically say, we can imagine there will be a few traffic backups caused by this work. Just be prepared.
