The China, Maine board of selectmen authorized an agreement with a company to provide public outreach on a pay-as-you-throw solid waste system for the town ahead of a vote next March.

The proposal would require China residents to purchase special garbage bags from the town to be used at the China transfer station. WasteZero produces the bags and runs pay-as-you-throw programs for around 800 communities in the country.

WasteZero currently works with Waterville and their pay-as-you-throw system.

Selectmen in China are looking at using the revenue from bag sales to offer rebates as an incentive to produce less trash.

What do you think? Do you support a pay-as-you-throw program? Those in Waterville, how do you like the program?
