Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin says he refuses to pay the fine NASCAR levied against him after he criticized NASCAR’s new Sprint Cup car. The fine stems from him comparing the new Gen 6 car to last year’s Car of Tomorrow saying it didn’t race as good as the COT and his success at Phoenix Raceway came from strategy during the race not the car.

Hamlin has vowed not to talk about competition issues again when talking to the media saying he considered himself a good spokesperson for NASCAR when things weren’t always going right. Even though Hamlin is refusing to pay the $25,000 fine, NASCAR may force him to. In the rule on fines it states ‘failure to pay promptly may result in suspension’.  According to NASCAR a driver should not criticize the quality of the core product.
