Feet Of Maine Beachgoers Were Stained Black By What? Gross!

Earlier this week, as the temperatures across New England neared the triple digits, people flocked to the beaches in an attempt to cool off.

Some beachgoers at Long Sands Beach in York, Maine, found that the bottom of their feet were stained black.  The substance, whatever it was, was nearly impossible to get off their feet.  It took a lot of scrubbing with soap and water to remove the substance.

Clearly, those who visited the week had a lot of questions.  What was it?  Where did it come from?  Was it toxic or dangerous?

Well, now we have some answers.

According to New England Cable News, the answer is....  Are you ready for it?  BUGS!  No, seriously.

Since it was reported by beachgoers York, Wells, and Ogunquit earlier this week, the Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection had been investigating the situation.

The took a sample of the substance, which appeared to be a black oil, and looked at it under a microscope.  It was pretty clear to scientists that it was made up of millions and millions of little insects.

Scientists still have some questions, though.  They are trying to figure out what kind of bugs were on the beach and where they came from.
