It's like a tumbling tower.  Once one major retailer announces they are closing, many follow suit.

But why would major retailers even think of closing their doors for 24 hours in March?  What does March bring that the other months do not?

If you are thinking spring, you are partially correct. However, it's something even bigger to make these chains close their doors and lose hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not more) for their actions.

It was just announced that T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls will all be closed on Sunday, March 31.  The New England-based parent company, TJX, is located in Framingham, Massachusetts.

In addition, USA Today reports these other retailers will be closed for March 31 as well.  Don't try to visit Lowe's, Sam's Club, or Costco on this date.  The stores across New England and America will be lights out.

This closing for March 31 goes for Macy's, Target, and Aldi's stores too.

Why are so many major chains closing up shop for this one day?

The annual Christian liturgical celebration of Easter happens on Sunday, March 31 this year.  Easter is the biggest event of the Christian faith, and these companies have decided to give their employees the day off.

Easter is a moveable feast, which means it's a different date every year, depending on the liturgical calendar, but always on a Sunday.

It's an admirable move considering the overpowering greed of today's culture, but maybe I'm jaded.
