Poor sleep can affect your work, health and general mood. It's something I've been thinking about myself lately, so I wanted to share some tips on improving your sleep (without wasting money on things you don't need.)

#1 - Find the right mattress.

Most people know whether they prefer sleeping on something firm or something a little puffier, like a pillow top. While this is a good place to start, know that, unfortunately, most spouses don’t sleep in the same position or like the same amount of firmness. The good news is that they make special beds for that, beds where each person can control the firmness on their side. Additionally, you should also check out Zero Gravity beds from manufacturers like Malouf Structures.

#2 - Find the perfect pillow that complements your sleeping style.

Not every pillow is made equally. I know, I was shocked at this, too. There are pillows specially designed for back sleepers, stomach sleepers — and even those who are like me and sleep on their sides. You can even find pillows that are infused with essential oils that help with relaxation and sleep such as lavender.

#3 - Find the right bedding.

This one may be last on the list, but it really is the most important of all – your bedding! You may not realize it, but the sheets and comforter on your bed can be the deal breaker when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. If you’re waking up in the middle of the night sweating, it could be because of the fabric of your sheets or the thickness of your comforter. Sheets come in many different materials with different uses, such as silk, bamboo, microfiber, and cotton. Cotton bedding will keep cool in the warmer temperatures and warm in cooler temps, while silk is much more of an insulator, keeping you warmer. Silk will also keep your skin soft and help you achieve the “beauty sleep” you need.

The experts at Hamelin’s Furniture on South Street in Waterville can help you with all three of these steps and you can test all the lines of mattresses that they carry, including a zero-gravity bed.

A few days ago, I stopped by Hamelin’s Furniture to check out their newest products. This was not my first visit to Hamelin’s Furniture. Recently, I bought a Flexsteel couch from them. And, let me tell you, it is the best quality couch we’ve ever owned. And, I know this because I am the mother of a rough and tumble boy.

Not only do they carry high-quality merchandise, but they offer unmatched customer service. From the time you walk in the door when you are greeted with smiles (behind the masks), you are treated as if you are a member of their  family. It should not come as a big surprise that they are experts in furniture and customer service, they have been selling furniture to the good people of Central Maine for four generations.
