Maine Man Falls From Mountaintop Fire Tower, Sustains Head Injuries, Flown to Hospital by Helicopter

According to WMTW News 8, a Maine man has sustained serious head injuries after falling from a mountaintop fire tower on Sunday while hiking with a friend.

The news station reports that a South Portland man and a friend were hiking up New Hampshire's Mount Kearsarge on Sunday. When the pair reached the top, they decided to climb the lookout fire tower at the summit.

New 8 indicates that the man was at the top of the stairs when he fell and landed at the base of the tower. His hiking partner immediately rushed to provide aid at the same time that another hiker, who witnessed the fall, called 911.

911 operators on the line were quickly able to determine that the man's condition was worsening and could be life-threatening. They made the decision to call for the Medivac Aviation Unit from the Army National Guard.

The helicopter responded to the scene and was able to transport the injures man to a nearby hospital, though it was close to 3 hours after the initial fall, WMTW reports.

Currently, the man's condition is unknown, though we will keep this story updated as more information becomes available.
