Maine Shipyard Bath Iron Works Building Daycare Center For Employees
If you are a working parent in Maine, there is no doubt that you know the pains of finding childcare for your children.
Not only is it often difficult to find a spot at a reputable childcare facility, the weekly cost is often more than a family can afford.
That is not meant to be a criticism of what daycare centers charge, because obviously, businesses have expenses.
In some cases, this lack of affordable daycare has affected major Maine businesses.
Bath Iron Works is one of those businesses.
According to an article from WGME, a representative for Bath Iron Works says the shipyard has 900 employees with at least one child under the age of 7. The lack of affordable childcare has led to some workers leaving their jobs.
In an effort to retain employees with children, Bath Iron Works has partnered with the YMCA to open a daycare facility.

The news station reported that the Bath Area YMCA purchased a building at Cook’s Corner in Brunswick and that Bath Iron Works is paying to have the space renovated into a daycare facility.
Once it is completed, the YMCA will operate the facility.
Additionally, the YMCA plans to open an additional space in Bath, according to WGME.
In total, there will be about 240 spots available, with 150 of those spots guaranteed to Bath Iron Works employees, the news station noted.
It is hoped that the facilities will be open by spring.
