There have been a lot of top 10 lists lately from food to sightseeing to living. This list is going to take a look at the bottom of a list instead of the top. These are the 3 worst states to make a living and Maine is in there.

These rankings are based on living expenses, employment statistics, unemployment rate, workplace illness, injuries and fatalities plus other factors.

Maine ranks #3 as the worst state to make a living. The biggest negative factor is the high amount of workplace safety incidents, tied for the highest workplace illness, injuries and fatalities. 5.3 workplace incidents per 100 workers, that is very high.

Another reason Maine ranked #3 is the cost of living is above average. The average income is around $42,000 but the estimated state tax on average income is $2,709.

Our state did fair better that two other states though.

At 2nd worst is Oregon at 30% above the national average. The average income is at $46,850 with state tax at $3,981.

The worst state to make a living in is Hawaii. The cost of living in index is an incredible 170.8 driven by housing costs. The average income is $46,000 with state tax average of $3,073. When you adjust for taxes and cost of living, workers in Hawaii receive only .55 for every $1.00 they make. (glad you live in Maine now huh?)
