Maine’s Governor’s Restaurant Sign Stirs Social Media Debate

Unless you live under a rock (and if you do please don't take offense) then you have seen this photo circulating the interwebs for the last several days.

The photo is of the Maine famous Governor's Restaurant sign, more importantly, the marquis that sits just under the logo. The online controversy started when people started sharing a photo of the marquis that reads in part 'work here part-time, still get unemployment'.

This has caused a social media uproar over whether or not employers should be encouraging people to both work and collect unemployment benefits simultaneously. On the other side, people are advocating that those in the service industry (especially those working part-time and during a pandemic) are not making the money that they once were a year ago.

What IS unemployment insurance?

Unemployment insurance provides a temporary source of income to individuals who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. Unemployment insurance is funded solely by unemployment taxes paid by employers; employees do not pay into the unemployment system. -MDOL @ Maine.Gov

Maximum unemployment benefits in Maine can reach a maximum of 26 weeks according to the Maine Department of Labor.
