Now that the Super Bowl is over it’s time to start thinking baseball. Spring Training gets underway soon. For the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, pitchers and catchers report February 15 with position players reporting February 18. This year, Major League Baseball will travel to Australia for the opening series of the season.

The 2014 opening series will feature the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney, Australia. They will play at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 22nd and 23rd and will mark the first time a Major League regular season game will be played in that country.

It’s not the first time Major League baseball has opened a season outside the United States. In 1999 the season began in Mexico, in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 it got started in Tokyo, Japan and in 2001, San Juan, and Puerto Rico.

Major League baseball has played at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground before; in 1888 the Spaulding’s World Tourists played a series of exhibition games there and in 1914 the White Sox beat the Giants 5-4 on the cricket grounds.
