You’ll Be Surprised by the Most ‘Irish’ Town in Maine
Maybe it is because of how abnormal the weather has been this winter. Maybe it is because of how much we have been focused on the political season. Maybe it is because we are still recovering from the holidays. Whatever the reason, 2024 just seems to be flying by.
It may be hard to believe, but we are less than two weeks away from Saint Patrick's Day 2024!
There's bound to be lots of parties, lots of live music, lots of corned beef, and GALLONS of green beer!
While many of us just pretend to be a little Irish on March 17 because it adds to the fun of the holiday, have you ever wondered exactly how many Mainers have actual Irish heritage?
How many people with Irish ancestry live in Maine?
According to a 2016 Bangor Daily News Widgets and Digits article, about 18% of the state's residents claim some Irish heritage.
Given that the state has a population of about 1,363,000, according to the 2020 census, that means about 250,000 people claim to be at least partially Irish.
Zippia recently listed Maine as having 222,310 residents with Irish ancestry, so pretty close.
What are the most Irish towns in Maine
Bangor Daily News pulled demographic data to find the MOST 'Irish' towns and cities in the state. One of the interesting things they found was that most of the really 'Irish' towns were either in the southern part of the state or the far northern part of the state. There were very few 'Irish' towns in central or western Maine.
When all of the data was tabulated, it was determined that Littleton is the most 'Irish' town in Maine. A very small town, 38 percent of the Aroostook County of Littleton claims to be at least partially Irish.
Do you have any Irish heritage, or do you just pretend to be Irish on March 17?
