For the next month, January 20 through February 20, we will be treated to a rare spectacle in the sky. The five planets closest to Earth, will align in the sky.

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be seen in the predawn sky giving you the opportunity to see a rare astronomical alignment. The best time to see the planets will be about an hour to an hour and a half before sunrise. Once daylight approaches it will drown out the glimmer of the planets.

This is rare, the last time the five planets aligned was in 2005.

Venus is usually the easiest to see in the sky, it’s the second brightest object next to the moon. The dimmest of the five planets is Mercury and second dimmest is Saturn.

While Mercury, Venus and Saturn are clustered over the southeastern horizon, Mars and Jupiter will be visible higher up in the sky to the south and southwest.
