Even though Maine is, for the most part, a very safe place to live, it does not mean that the state has no crime.

Over the course of a year, our state will see thousands of thefts, hundreds of assaults, and even a handful of murders.  It should not be a big surprise that some towns and cities are more prone to crime than others.

Each year, Safewise puts out their list of the safest cities in Maine,  These are the cities and towns that have had the fewest reported crimes (per capita) in the last year.

We have to admit that we were a little surprised by the safest town in Maine for 2026.  Given what we know about the town, it does make sense.  It is just that we rarely hear the town mentioned in conversations at all.  Well, maybe that is why it has the lowest crime rate in the entire state.

Check out the following list and let us know what you think.

These Are the Safest Towns in Maine in 2026

According to research done by Safewise, these are the safest towns and cities in Maine in 2026

As you can see from the preceding list, of the over 50 Maine cities ranked for safety this year, Eliot claimed #1, South Berwick jumped to #8, three cities reported zero violent crimes, Bar Harbor saw drops in both crime types, and most top 10 cities—suburbs of Bangor, Portland, and Portsmouth—had 0.4 or fewer violent crimes per 1,000 residents.

The study also found that Maine residents were most concerned about cyber crime (65%).  Violent crime and gun violence both came in next at 53%.  Next on the list was package theft - 24% of Mainers were most concerned about that type of crime.
