I mentioned in a story the other day about the town of Smithfield, Maine being the only town in the state to incorporate on February 29, leap day.

I noticed that the chance of someone being born on February 29 was 1 in 1461, very high odds. It got me to thinking about births in Central Maine and if we had any babies born on February 29th.

It took a call to Maine General, and being transferred a few times to find out. I made the call on the morning of February 29 but it wasn’t until the morning of March 1st I got a call back. I was blown away.

This year, 2016, on February 29th, leap day, Central Maine had 6 births. Think about that, a 1 in 1461 chance of a births on a leap day, and in Central Maine alone we had 6. Again, blown away.

Don’t know if they were boys or girls and didn’t want to know names for privacy reasons, but the fact we had 6 was incredible.
