The state of Maine is proposing an annual fee on electric and hybrid cars to pay for highway maintenance.

According to presshearald.com the Maine Department of Transportation wants an annual registration fee for these types of vehicles. The registration fee would be $150 for hybrid and $250 for electric vehicles.

The reasoning for the tax is that these type of vehicles are paying far less on gas tax than other vehicles and the state wants to come up with a way all vehicle owners will pay the same taxes for using the same roads.

In Maine though only 3% of all vehicle are hybrid or electric.
