It's a heartbreaking update to report, but the Police are currently looking for a thief who broke into the Salvation Army in Sanford and stole nearly $1,700 on Christmas day. Capt. Erin C. Smullen of the Salvation Army said a burglar pried open a metal door in the rear of the building sometime between 3:30pm on Christmas Eve and 10:30 Wednesday, when they returned to work. Smullen said that she believed this was the first break in at this location during her 5 years at the Sanford Location. According to CentralMaine.com they are insured and are in the process of repairing their door that was damaged during the break in.

Smullen says this is not just a theft against the Salvation Army, it's a theft against the people of Sanford since the money goes directly back to the community to help with heating need and food donations to local food pantries.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Sanford Police at 324-3644.
