There is an amazing and historical Facebook Group called, Old Pictures of Forgotten Maine and the photos that are posted draw you into a time that you wish you could be a fly on the wall. It's all documented images of Maine, back in the "old days." These photos may be in the past, but they are not forgotten. Over 9,000 people contribute to this group and it is so very enlightening and interesting.
According to Buffalo News, Union Church found in Wiscasset, Maine was determined to be the world's smallest church according to the 1989 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.
Let's take a moment to look at the sign, above the chapel, it reads,
"Pastor Smallest Church in The World NEVER LOCKED."
The picture is what pulled me in. Seeing a few people all piled in like sardines, giving side-eye, standing in a tiny building, attending a church ceremony of some sort. Let's just say, they are serious about their readings and stuff.
This church was made by 2 by 4s, measuring 4 1/2 by 7 feet! The roof is shingled and it has aluminon siding. It's like a hobbit style church and I am so into this and a hobbit is probably in it as well, as we speak.
This unique little gem that is tucked into the man-made island on 2 acres has provided many people with religious guidance and love.
Chandler Mason is the big man who created the small church. He still wants to install a small pulpit, two pews, an altar and a small organ!
"Mason's "Cross Island Chapel" is one inch smaller in both dimensions."
-Chandler Mason
Size doesn't matter, spirit does. If you're looking to visit this beautiful and historic church in Wiscasset, I think it would be an enlightening experience!
