Two Gardiner Area Meat Processors Land $350k Grant
Two local businesses will soon be getting a massive boost thanks to a federal meat and poultry grant program.
The two meat processing businesses, both based in Gardiner, will receive almost a half million dollars in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant Program. The funding is to modernize the operation of the businesses to expand markets and be better equipped to meet customer needs.
According to a report by Mainebiz, and a joint announcement by both U.S. Maine Senators, Collins and King said:
“Significant supply chain disruptions have placed financial pressure on Maine’s meat and poultry processors, created difficulties for farmers, and increased prices for consumers”
There are several businesses in the state of Maine receiving funding from this grant. There are two Central Maine businesses receiving direct funding, West Gardiner Beef received $150,000 which they will use to install a cooler and also some additional product handling equipment. They also plan to upgrade their 45yo smokehouse.
The other Central Maine business is Weston’s Meats and Poultry in Gardiner. They received $200,000 which they are going to use to expand their red meat and swine operating capacity. The improvements will increase capacity by 75%.
