Police ID Driver & Victim of I-95 Crash in Central Maine
Authorities have released the identities of the driver and the person killed in a Tuesday morning single-vehicle crash on I-95 near Clinton.
A press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety explains that police have arrested 31-year-old Tyler Hewitt, of Presque Isle, in Clinton. On Thursday morning, Clinton Police got a call about a suspicious person walking along Hill Road. Officers canvassed the area and eventually found Hewitt as he came out of the woods near Interstate 95.
Troopers say Hewitt had been driving on a suspended license when he was involved in a fatal crash on the morning of November 25th on I-95 in Clinton.
The crash took the life of thirty eight year old John Perkins of Hampden. Hewitt reportedly ran from the scene of that crash before troopers could get there.
Police say they also found a large amount of suspected meth in a backpack Hewitt was carrying. He is now facing charges that include aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death, and operating after suspension.
*NOTE - All suspects are considered innocent until being found guilty in a court of law
State Police thanked the Clinton Police Department for the steady support in this investigation. They also thanked the Clinton Fire Department, the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, and Capital Police for their help.
