Recognizing diversity is an essential element of academic excellence, the University of Maine at Augusta is offering Equity and Inclusion scholarships to students whose academic achievement and varied experiences will enhance and enrich the education of all UMA students and the institution’s educational mission.

Equity and Inclusion Scholars may receive up to four years of funding, provided they continuously enroll each fall and spring semester in either full or part-time study and maintain minimum GPA requirements for continuation funding.

According to an article in the KJ:

Awards for graduate full-time students will consist of $3,000 ($1,500/semester).
Awards for graduate part-time students will consist of $1,500 ($750/semester).
Awards for undergraduate full-time students will consist of $4,000 ($2,000/semester).
Awards for undergraduate part-time students will consist of $2,000 ($1,000/semester).

This scholarship can be used to cover education related expenses including tuition and fees. Two graduate and five undergraduate scholarships will also be available for awarding each year.

Keep in mind the scholarship deadline is March 15.

There are several eligibility creterias that must be met to qualify. One of those items is to complete an essay of 500 words or less based on these prompts:

  • Diversity can be defined as the inclusion of individuals who exhibit differences in ethnicity, culture, orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, age, ability, experience and thought. How do you make UMA a more diverse community and/or how will you contribute to furthering the work of diversity and inclusion principles within the UMA community?
  • Many studies have found evidence that the characteristic of “grit” or persistence has a direct relationship with the ability to achieve long-term goals and success. Please explain or describe an obstacle or barrier you have overcome and, as a result of this experience, how your persistence/grit could help nurture diversity and inclusion at UMA.
  • Many individuals have significant prior experience in actively promoting efforts associated with equity, diversity and inclusion. Describe how your experience demonstrates your commitment and ability to engage in these areas, and /or identify how your commitment to these principles will be reflected in your educational experiences and beyond.You can get complete scholarship details by visiting uma.edu/eischolarship.
