UPDATE: 99 Rhode Island Vehicles Registered in Maine Being Fined

Last month we at B98.5 discovered a story about a nondescript plot of land in Jefferson where hundreds of out of state vehicles were registered. See the original story here.

As a recap, it is legal in Maine to not be a resident and have your vehicle registered here. This was a law made in an effort for those who have summer homes in the area to be able to keep vehicles in the area and of course, for the state to make more money.

Rhode Islanders, and specifically in the Providence area, have crunched the numbers and discovered that it is, in fact, cheaper to register vehicles here in Maine. Which many have, using this address on the Waldoboro Road in Jefferson.

Here's the problem outside of the state of Rhode Island losing out on money, these Rhode Island residents have been avoiding more than $16,000 in various traffic and parking violations. Because the vehicles in question are registered to this plot of land, tickets have been mailed to Maine, not to the actual Rhode Island Resident.

*Cue famous Scooby-Doo line, "And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

The Providence Police Department and the Providence Municipal Court were able to track down 99 Rhode Island residents with vehicles with Maine plates with outstanding fines that include $2,950 in speeding tickets, $7,735 in red-light violations, and $5,670 in parking tickets according to the Boston Globe.

If the fines are not paid, they'll receive a court date.
