If you’ve driven through Oakland lately, you might’ve noticed something special taking shape. And now, it’s official.

According to a press release from the Waterville Area Habitat for Humanity, they are in the process of handing over the keys to a brand-new home, built right in Oakland.

It’s a big moment for one local family… and honestly, a pretty great example of what can happen when a community rolls up its sleeves and gets to work.

There was even a ribbon-cutting and key ceremony held on Tuesday, March 31 at 3:30 PM, that event was put together with help from the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce.

This wasn’t just a construction project.  Local businesses, volunteers, and partner groups all chipped in to make it happen. The future homeowners themselves put in more than 300 hours of what Habitat calls “sweat equity,” working right alongside volunteers.

Executive Director Jonathan Irwin says they’re thankful for everyone who helped bring the project across the finish line, adding that it really shows what’s possible when people come together to support each other.

And there’s more happening.

Habitat recently opened a new office and intake center on Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville, inside the same building as The Robin’s Nest and The Finery.  The move is expected to help grow services, boost donations, and eventually bring back a Habitat ReStore to the area.

Looking ahead, 2026 is a big year.  Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the Waterville group already has a full calendar, including a gala, a summer cornhole tournament, and their annual golf tournament.

They’re also expanding home repair programs starting in April, including things like accessibility ramps and weatherization. One upcoming project will partner with the Waterville Soup Kitchen to build a ramp at its new building.

If you or someone you know is looking for affordable homeownership opportunities or help with repairs, applications are open now.
