Waterville Free Outdoor Public WI-FI A Success
There's something that many people still don't know about downtown Waterville.... there is free outdoor public WI-FI thanks to the Central Maine Growth Council and it's been in place since 2018.
According to a news story by MaineBiz, more than a half million people have signed into this great gift of free public WI-FI. Downtown businesses have benefits from the increase in foot traffic to the downtown area, and the public has benefited by not having to use their personal data, a win-win.
Garvan Donegan, the council's director of planning said in the article that:
“From Post Office Square to the Hathaway Creative Center, downtown’s free public Wi-Fi has continued to connect residents and visitors alike to Waterville’s diverse array of businesses, community amenities and eateries,”
Having this high-speed internet in place outdoors in the Waterville downtown has served as a pilot for many Maine communities that are considering similar projects.
The push to deliver broadband and high speed internet across the state of Maine is going to continue to be an ongoing effort but it is nice to see it working so successfully in Waterville.
