An American woman, Sonya Baumstein, is hoping to become the first woman to row solo across the Pacific Ocean. She left Choshi, Japan, beginning her 6,000 mile journey to San Francisco.

Three others have made the 6,000 mile journey but never a woman. She is expected to row 14 to 16 hours a day in a custom-designed boat. If all goes well she expects to arrive in San Francisco in September.

She has already rowed the Atlantic to the Caribbean and says the worst part of the trip is moonless nights. You can’t see and anticipate waves coming at you making it hard to row and getting her soaking wet.

She ‘will not' have a support boat following her because of the cost, instead, she will have a support team remotely from shore using satellite phone and GPS.
