You Will Never Guess the Name of This Lake in Northwest Aroostook County
The name alone is worth the trip.
But it would be a hell of a trip. About six hours one way!
Thank you to Nathan Ryan who is very familiar with Ugh Lake. He thought of Ugh Lake when we were chatting about Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. The longest name for a lake in New England.
Okay, that is one long name, but it's commonly referred to as Webster Lake. Boring! But how many times can you say let's pack up and go to Ugh?
Nathan says that like much of unorganized Maine, this is a rugged lake and not for the faint-hearted. You have to carry a boat or canoe for about 100 yards. But if you can handle that portage, you're in for a day of fishing brook trout.
Nathan was up at Ugh Lake about four years ago. You can get to it through Ashland. He says that the lake has a lot of vegetation on the bottom and is the perfect home for green newts! What's a newt? I had to Google that one.
Both garter snakes and newts are not venomous, meaning they won't poison you by biting you. Newts don't bite humans and are actually pretty friendly.
If you want to brag that your vacation was Ugh, then load up that canoe and be prepared to carry it to Ugh Lake in Northwest Aroostook County. If you are looking for some solitude, there's nothing better than a lake with no one else around for miles...
