According to an article on the WABI website, a former Maine Department of Corrections administrator has admitted to theft and bribery charges connected to the misuse of more than $2 million in state funds.

Gerald Merrill, 64, entered the guilty plea Monday in a Bangor courtroom after previously denying the allegations. At the time of his 2023 arrest, Merrill was working as deputy superintendent and business manager for correctional facilities in Charleston and Machiasport.

According to prosecutors, Merrill used a state-issued credit card to rack up nearly $2.4 million in purchases from a Florida businesswoman and her associates.  Authorities say some of those purchases were significantly overpriced, while other items were never delivered.  Prosecutors also allege that, in return, the businesswoman paid Merrill more than $500,000 in cash as part of the scheme.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Merrill is expected to serve five years in prison, followed by three years of probation. He will also be required to pay restitution, though officials say the final amount will be determined during his sentencing, which is scheduled for May.

Merrill remains free on bail until that hearing.
