State fire investigators are asking for the public's help as they investigate what they say was an intentionally set fire at the Masonic Temple in Bath.

According to the Maine Office of State Fire Marshal, police and firefighters responded to the Masonic Temple at 958 Washington Street around 10:02 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, after a burned American flag was discovered hanging from the front of the building.

Because of the suspicious circumstances, investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office were called to the scene. After examining the area, investigators determined the fire had been deliberately set and officially classified the incident as arson.

During the investigation, officials learned that an unknown person placed a new American flag on a fence in front of the Masonic Temple sometime after the fire occurred. Investigators say no members or representatives of the Masonic Temple were responsible for putting up the replacement flag.

Authorities are now hoping to identify the individual who hung the new flag, believing they may have information that could help advance the investigation.
