Food insecurity in central Maine is nothing new. The Augusta Food Bank sees the need on a daily basis. As stimulus money begins to run out, The Augusta Food Bank is seeing a 20% increase in requests for food.

According to their Facebook page, the Augusta Food Bank has also developed a new way to receive food fom the food bank called "AFB Marketplace". This inovative approach to the food bank experience allows people to self select thier food, kinda like a supermarket. People can choose what they need from dedicated sections like meat, fruits and veggies, dairy, and other household staples like flour and sugar.

The Augusta Food Bank started a smaller scale version of this at the beginning of June, and now have expanded the experience to a larger scale to serve people better with hopes that it will take away some of the stigma of getting what a person needs in a more friendly intuitive manner.

People are asked to bring thier own bags but there are no limitations as to what people can choose.

Currently, the Augusta Food Bank is open to Augusta & Manchester residents from 9-11am, Monday through Wednesday for the AFB Marketplace by appointment, and on Thursdays offers "Free Food Thursdays" which does not have a residency requirement and is open to all with no appointment needed.
