For many people, the 4th of July is the real kickoff to summer.

Since it is a day off for most people, it is a chance for the whole family to get together to celebrate the great country we call home.

Nearly every city and town across America hosts an Independence Day celebration.  Some of them are elaborate, some are very basic, but most fall somewhere in the middle.

The City of Augusta's Independence Day Celebration

As the capital of Maine, it makes sense that Augusta would host an impressive 4th of July celebration.

The city’s 4th of July celebration has an old-school feel.  The organizers have planned it to be community-oriented.  It is the kind of event that your grandparents would have attended.

This year’s events will get kicked off at 8:30 AM with Downeast Brass performing in Augusta’s Market Square.

Of course, the real action starts with the annual parade, which will roll out of its staging area (behind the Burton M. Cross office building) at 10 AM.  As it has in years past, the parade will roll onto State Street, down Water Street, across the Calumet Bridge, and end in front of Old Fort Western.

At Old Fort Western, the mayor will read the Declaration of Independence.

At 12:30, there will be an old time chicken BBQ hosted by the Calumet Club.

The action then moves to Mill Park.  From 2-5 PM, there’ll be bounce houses, a magician, a DJ spinning music, food trucks, and more.

The fun continues into the evening with several bands taking the main stage.  More information on that to come.

The city’s spectacular fireworks display kicks off at 9:05.  The best viewing will be from Mill Park, as the fireworks will be launched from the old Statler Mill site.
