Last week, we told you that the State of Maine saw a decline in the number of fatal pedestrian crashes between 2023 and 2024.

As of the writing of that article, there had been six fatal pedestrian crashes in Maine in 2025.

Now, it appears that number has jumped to seven.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, police responded to a tragic incident on Hussey Hill Road in Albion on Friday afternoon

A 2016 Hyundai sedan had struck three pedestrians.  Struck in the crash was one adult and two people who have been described as 'minors'.

The vehicle reportedly fled from the scene.

The adult, identified as 33-year-old Mollie Egold of Albion, was seriously injured and had to be flown to the hospital by LifeFlight.  She is now in stable condition.  One of the children was also flown out and remains in critical condition.  Heartbreakingly, the second child died at the scene.

After a fast-moving investigation, Troopers were able to track down both the vehicle and the driver involved.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as  44-year-old Benjamin Lancaster, of Albion.

Following his arrest, Lancaster was taken to the Kennebec County Jail and charged with:Operating Under the Influence Causing Death, Operating Under the Influence Causing Serious Bodily Injury (2 counts), Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Bodily Injury (2 counts)
