New Year's resolutions, many make them, and even fewer keep them. If you made a resolution to live healthier in 2015, we have some helpful advice for you from the Healthy Living Director at the KVYMCA, Craig Cameron.

Craig has been with the KVYMCA for almost 5 years and is a certified personal trainer.

I sat down with Craig and asked him for some advice for the first-time gym goer.

Craig says comfort is a big key when joining a gym. Know your surroundings and find a gym where you have friends that are attending.

I asked Craig what are some of the mistakes that many make when they first join a gym. Craig said that trying to do it on your own is a mistake. Knowledge is a key, learn what to do at the gym and add variety to your routine so that you don't get bored.

Craig also added that ask yourself what you want your body to look like. Why are you working out at the gym? Are you training to run a race? Are you getting into power lifting? Know why you are there and build your routine around that.

Many people that join a gym for the first time say they just don't have the time, so I asked Craig, if you only had time to do 5 things at the gym, what should you do? Craig says 30 minutes a day is ample time to workout if you use your time wisely. Here are the five things Craig says you should do:
1.) 10 minutes of vigorous cardio
2.) pushups and burpees
3.) speed squats
4.) Light Weights with a high rep Dumbell Circuit
5.) TRX Suspension training.

The KVYMCA is starting their 10th 'Lose It With the Y' on Monday, January 12th. Stop in at 5 p.m. that day to join. It's a 12-week program with a resolutions theme. So far 1,500 pounds have been lost with 'Lose It With The Y'.

KVYMCA has brand new fitness center equipment, an indoor track, lots of cardio equipment, TRX suspension training, a sauna, two indoor pools, a basketball gym, and 50 free classes per week. Visit them in both Augusta and Manchester.

If you just joined a gym for the first time, stick with it and we hope the advice Craig gave us helps you!
