There is a new estimate that is being tossed around to complete the building of a new Augusta Police Department at the former Hannaford site on Willow Street. According to the KJ, the estimate is about $20.5 million and although that sounds like a steep price, experts say that it should not require a property tax increase to get it built.

There have been concerns by the Augusta city manager, William Bridgeo that contruction costs have risen since the pandemic began however the $20.5 million price tag has been deemed affordable.

The plan is to have a 2022 spring construction start time which does assume the city can purchase the exsiting site for around $650,000.

Citizens of Augutsa can expect to see a bond for the financing of the to be repaid over a 30 year time period.

There are also hope that more funds, around $1.8 million will land in the city coffers with the expiration of a tax agreement with the Market Place at Augusta.
